Kitchen Electrical

Kitchen electrical and lighting across San Diego County

A San Diego kitchen remodel is the right time to bring the electrical and lighting up to current code. We add dedicated circuits for the range, oven, and microwave, swap to GFCI outlets at the counter, install recessed and under-cabinet LED runs, and rough in pendants over the island. All work is permitted and inspected, not just done.

What do homeowners ask about Kitchen Electrical?

How much does kitchen electrical work cost in San Diego?

A typical San Diego kitchen electrical scope runs $2,200-$7,500 depending on the number of new circuits, the lighting layout, and any panel upgrade. Adding a dedicated range circuit, four recessed lights, and under-cabinet LED runs is on the lower end. A panel upgrade or a full rewire lands at the higher end.

Do I need a permit for kitchen electrical work in San Diego?

Yes. The City of San Diego and most surrounding cities require an electrical permit for any new circuit, panel change, or significant rewire. The permit covers the rough inspection (before drywall closes the walls) and the final inspection. We pull the permit before rough-in and schedule both inspections.

How many outlets do I need in a kitchen?

Current California code requires two 20-amp small-appliance circuits serving the counter, with outlets every 4 feet along the counter run, plus a dedicated circuit for the fridge, dishwasher, garbage disposal, and any large appliance. Most San Diego kitchens built before 1996 do not meet this standard, which is why a remodel is the right time to bring it up to code.

What kind of lighting works best in a San Diego kitchen?

A layered approach works best: recessed LEDs for general lighting, under-cabinet LEDs for task lighting at the counter, and pendants over the island for accent and seating-area light. We size the recessed layout to the ceiling height and the counter runs, and we put the under-cabinet on a separate switch from the ceiling.

Can I add a 240V outlet for an induction range?

Yes. Most modern induction ranges use a 240V, 40-50 amp dedicated circuit on #6 or #8 wire, depending on the model. We confirm the range spec, pull the permit, run the new circuit from the panel, install the outlet, and coordinate the final inspection. This is also a good time to add a 240V outlet for a future wall oven or a tankless water heater on the same circuit run.
