Kitchen island build and replace across San Diego County
A well-designed island changes how a kitchen works. We build new islands with cabinets, drawers, a waterfall or mitered countertop, a breakfast bar overhang, and matching end panels, plus integrate a prep sink, range, or undercounter microwave. Existing islands get re-skinned, refaced, or extended when the layout is right but the look is not.
What's included in this service?

- You are reworking the layout and the new footprint supports a bigger island
What do homeowners ask about Kitchen Island?
How much does a kitchen island cost in San Diego?
A new San Diego kitchen island with stock or semi-custom cabinets and a quartz top runs $6,500-$14,000. Custom cabinets with a waterfall quartz or marble panel run $14,000-$28,000+. Adding a built-in range, prep sink, or undercounter microwave adds $1,500-$4,500 depending on gas, plumbing, and electrical runs.
How big should a kitchen island be?
Plan 36-42 inches of clear walkway on all working sides of the island, more if two cooks are working at the same time. The island itself is usually 24-30 inches deep for prep and 36-48 inches wide for the run. Bigger kitchens can support an L-shaped or two-tier island with a raised bar.
Can you add a kitchen island to a small kitchen?
It depends on the room. A 10x10 kitchen with 36-inch walkways can support a 24-inch deep island that is more prep table than storage. A 12x12 or larger kitchen supports a full island with storage. We measure the room and existing traffic flow at the consult before recommending an island vs. a peninsula or a rolling cart.
What is a waterfall countertop?
A waterfall is a stone slab that continues from the countertop down the side of the island to the floor, with a mitered 45-degree corner where the top and side meet. It is the most common modern island detail. It costs more because the fabricator cuts and miteres an extra panel, but the visual is clean and contemporary.
Do I need a permit to add a kitchen island?
You need a permit when the new island adds a gas line, an electrical circuit, or plumbing (sink or instant hot). Cabinet-only islands with no new utility runs usually do not need a permit. We confirm the permit scope at the design consult and pull it before work starts.
